Eighteen-year-old Sophie Claveaux, a Jewish farm girl, has long believed she carries a curse. Her mother died giving birth to her, and her father has never fully recovered from the loss. Blaming herself, Sophie dreams of changing her fate by leaving the farm behind to study art in Paris.

But when her father joins the war, Sophie’s plans are set aside and she is sent to live in safety with her grandmother, only to discover there are no safe places in a time of war.

Now, she must find the courage to protect her grandmother, her new home, and the blind artist who challenges everything she believes about fate, love, and herself.
